    Chapter 7: He Tastes Blood

All through the next day, I thought a lot:  Why was I a shadow weredragon, when I had a good heart? Did it have something to do with anything? And why was Bently out there in the place, anyway?! But above all, I worried about this one thing:  Who was I going to bite??

It was noon, and I had lost interest in SSX3, and was considering maybe even popping in On Tour, despite the fact I dispised it for the amount of things they took out, which was made up for only slightly by the intense speed, the addition of a cool grind, and the awesome tracks. I got up off my bed and walked to my shelves, where my collection of games was, and heard a knock at the door.

I whipped my head to it, stopping and still holding my controller. "Come in," I said.

Sonya opened up the door. "Hey, Dragos?"

    "Yeah?"

She leaned on the frame of the door. "What are you gonna be doing at 8 tonight?" she asked.

I gasped, and looked at the clock. "Phew...Well, I'm gonna...well...I dunno. I think I'm gonna just stick around here...No. I'm going to Mina's. Yeah," I floundered.

She lifted her head, eyes widening a little brifly, but she dropped it again. "Okay. I'll stay here, make sure I'm safe. You make sure you're safe, too."

    I nodded. "Okay."

    ***

Later that night, at around 7:30, I left and went over to Mina's. I came in and looked about. Everyone looked uneasy. I sighed. "Okay, now, so how are we gonna do this? Are you guys gonna hold me or something??" I asked.

Linda shrugged. "I dunno. We all tried, even my ghost friend, to restrain Mina, but it didn't work...for that time."

"Yeah. I've been successfully restrained twice. Third time's the charm, I bet, though," Mina said, smiling weakly.

I came over across the living room and sat down on the sofa by her. "What'll I prolly do?" I asked, looking at my hands.

Tanya chuckled. "Well, you'll prolly, first night, fight with all your might, physically, for all until 9:00. Then, the curse's negative effect will dissipate, but it'll come back next phase. Then, you'll prolly use abilities. Third time, you'll do everything you possibly can to escape, at least if someone you know walks by," she added, giving me a look.

"Eh-heh-heh..." I blushed and gave a sheepish grin.

Srg. Joe came over, arms crossed on his big, but not too big, t-shirted chest. The t-shirt looked different from the one I saw on him last night...instead of an Army t-shirt, it was a plain white one, and one that looked like it just, but not barely, fit. It showed his big, toned muscles. "Hmph. Don't worry, though, Dragos; you're not gettin' through MY defense," he said. He laughed.

Tanya looked sideways at him, shirt mainly. "Dear, must you...?" she asked, for what sounded like the umpteenth time.

Srg. smiled sheepishly. "Well, come on, it's really cool, you have to admit," he said, flexing his muscles and causing the fabric to stretch a little.

I suddenly got it. "Heeey, you're wearing that on purpose, aren't you?" I asked.

He shot me a look, then smiled. "Yeah, yeah. So what if I like the feeling of a shirt just tearing up from my big-ass muscles? It's cool! You'll see, cuz I'm the one who transforms first on these nights," he added, smiling.

"Yeah, cuz he transforms a little earlier than when we do," Linda whispered, and giggled.

But before the Sarge could do anything, the clock bonged 8:00. I'd gotten there only five minutes before it, by my watch, and only four had passed. I bolted up, then looked at my watch. "Heey..."

"Oooh, no, here ah go!" the Sarge said, making a show, and transformed himself. I gawked as I saw the shirt just barely survive the rips from his wings, which caused tears on the back that expanded a fair bit, but not too much. Not only that, he was stretching the fabric to huge extents, and it was about to break. When he was finished, he smirked and then posed.

This caused his muscles to bulge, and thus, the shirt, spectacularly, just TORE apart, into shreds, and fell to the floor. Linda clapped while everyone else just rolled their eyes. I just gawked. "That WAS cool," I mumbled.

Sarge grinned. "Toldja," he said, and picked up the peices and placed them into his pocket.

THEN, my watch beeped, and I looked. It was an analouge with some electronic features, which was a cool find, and it beeped every hour. I gasped. "OH, MY--"

EVERYONE transformed, except Sarge, who was now attent and coming towards me. I watched myself transform, and felt the pain from last time, but lessened, wash over me as I quickly transformed, but not as quickly as last night. Everyone else was transformed when it reached my neck.

"W-wha? I...I feel really weird!!" I said as it crawled up. I did feel weird. I was losing my focus, I felt like something was pushing me in my mind, and I could feel my blood turn cold..."AAGGHH!! HHEELLP!!"

I was losing control of my body. My mind. EVERYTHING.

    "NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"

I lost it. I was now sitting in my head, a bystander, and watched as I slowly went limp, standing. Then, I heard people come around me and I felt them grab me. But I roared and threw out my arms and tail, but I wasn't strong enough. VERY strong arms and a VERY strong tail had gotten me in a very tight lock, and weren't ready to let go at all. I, the REAL me, tried to stop, but I had no control. I gave up and watched in horror.

    I roared.

    "HOLD HIM!!"

    "Drays, I gotcha! Don't worry!"

    "AAIIEEE!! QUIT SHAKING YOUR LEGS!!"

I looked down and snarled at the little girl of a weredragon clinging to my leg, which I was shaking as violently as I could. I roared again and thrashed about as best I could. I also sniffed the air, but could only smell untainted humanity. Nobody I knew. But I still tore at everyone around me.

Once, I bunched up all my muscles, and unleashed every apendage I could to attack. This threw everyone off me, but before I'd even run four steps, I was tackled from behind by a very heavy weredragon, and fell to the floor.

"Sorry, kid, but you AIN'T getting away from me!!"

I was in hell. For an entire hour, I never stopped. Not even once. Finally, though, I heard it.

    BEEP-BEEP.

My watch. It read 9:00. As I looked at this, I roared as loud as I could and writhed. I felt my soul coming back into my body...

    I, ME, came back.

I opened my eyes, which had been shut very tight, and looked around. I was on the floor, with everyone standing around me. I felt like I'd gone through a wringer. I shakilly started to get up, but as I moved, I couldn't help going, "Auughh!!" as my muscles screamed at me. I'd done more work trying to throw everyone off me than I'd ever done in my life. One hour of continuous strenuous activity. But they probably were all worse. I fought the pain, got up, and stood, looking at everyone, panting.

"...Hey...sorry..." I breathed, and almost collapsed. Mina caught me.

"Don't worry, Drays. You probably feel horrible, don'cha?" she asked, walking me to the couch.

I weakly nodded. "Yeah...but you guys feel worse, don't you?" I asked back.

She laughed weakly. "Yeah, I guess so...You won't believe how hard a fight you put up. It was insane..." She trailed off, sitting beside me.

We sat there, and everyone else came and sat around in different chairs to rest. We waited, resting for a while, until the clock bonged that it was 9:15. Then, feeling a little better, I got up and stretched all my limbs. My tail kinda kinked a little oddly. I turned to everyone else. "Well, now what?" I asked cheerfully.

Mina sighed. "Well, next, we're gonna basically either train our tails off, or maybe go out on a night flight. But it's kinda...cold outside..." she shivered. I frowned. She doesn't really like the cold? But wind carries coldness very well...*mental shrug*, I thought.

"But Mom, I'm too tired to train," whined Linda.

Tanya sighed. "Me, too, but I think that all can be remedied. See, we have to do SOMETHING while we're all wide-awake, and we can't really go out, and it's a waste to, like, sit and watch late-night tv; nothing's on in the middle of the night, anyway. So, we've got two choices:  Train with Sgt. Joe, or stay home and do Math with me." She smirked and crossed her arms.

The rest of us, and even Linda's ghost friend I bet, sweat-dropped, and we said that we'll just go and train with the Sarge.

"Well, troops," Sarge said, "let's move out!"

"YES, SIR!" was the affirmative from everyone, and we all laughed.

    *****

    "IYAH!"

    "WOAH! ...HYEAH!"

    "!!"

Mina and I sparred, using fists, feet, tails, and even wings. She was very good with her wings, which made sense, seeing as she was a wind weredragon. She attacked by rushing and trying to scratch at me with the wing-fingers' claws at the tips. It appeared that wind dragons' wings are so durable, that she can even block with them, which was a good skill. But I couldn't ever try and slash at them, because then they'd tear.

I wasn't too good at all, but then, Sarge said we could use claws, and I went to town. I found that I was very good at it, very good indeed. I nailed a few hits, none too bad, on her. I actually began to get better at using my tail.

Then, we rested a little while, or me and Mina. Linda went up, and she sparred against Linda. Being small, she had both advantages and disadvantages.

"She's quick," I commented to Mina.

She nodded. "Yeah. She's pretty athletic, a sprinter and an acrobat. Although," she added, as her little sister nimbly leapt over a sweep her mom tried, "I don't think she's been much of a gymnist until she'd been bitten."

"Hmm," I murmered, and watched on.

Then, soon, Sarge came up and sparred with his wife. She was, surprisingly, a fairly good fighter in the melee, but still, she couldn't match her hubbie's skill. She came back with a few bruises. "Honey, do you have to fight me like that?" she asked, massaging her shoulder.

"Sorry, but that's what the real world's like. I don't LIKE hitting you at all, really, Tanya, but still, you should know about warfare's cruelty," he replied. Having plenty of energy left, he called me up.

I groaned. "Don't beat up on me, please?" I asked.

He growled. "No. You're getting the same training I'm giving to everyone. Deal with it."

I groaned again and got up.

I got schooled. HARD. I got punched, smacked, tailed, clawed, headbutted, and kicked all around the arena. He didn't use his wings, though. They weren't as armored as Mina's, he admitted. I did, however, gouge him pretty hard again, right on the abs. He smacked me with his tail.

This went on, everyone alternating and soon I'd sparred with everyone. Then, midnight came. That's when we decided to do special attacks.

Immediatly, Tanya and Sarge sparred, this time Tanya kicking his tail with as much mercy as he did to her before. We all laughed.

When I came up, I used Frost Blast, Ice Claws, and Frost Sheild again, for practice. I practiced some, then had an idea. "Hey, you think I could blow frost?" I asked.

Tanya shrugged, her clipboard out again. "I bet, but don't count on it being very good. Humans don't have much lung capacity, and we've still got very similar builds to humans, even as weredragons. Try if you want," she said.

I did. It didn't work. Mina, however, sat up and literally blew me away.

"YIPE!! MINA!!" I hollered as I got swept up by my wings.

She stopped blowing and smiled. "I can blow my element," she teased, laughing.

I cursed as I landed. "Hrmmm..." I decided to try something. "I wonder..." I readied a Frost Blast in each paw, then swung, but still holding on. A stream of frost spurted from the orb of coldness in my clawed hand, coming from the direction my palm faced. I smiled. "Okay!" I said, and then held out both paws, pointing the palms out, and span once.

"COOOLLL!!" went Linda, and I stopped and saw that a small spiral of frost had shot out around me.

"Okay, alright, COOL!!" I said, excited, and then did the same, bigger orbs of cold in paws, and span more times this time. I could see the small tornado forming around my body as I span, and before I could get too dizzy, I stopped. It was awesome. I was surrounded by cold, beautiful coldness, all around me. I grinned, the others shivered. "SWEET!!" I shouted. "Prof. Glory? I think I found a new attack: Frost Spinner!" I called over, the room spinning slightly from dizziness.

She acknowledged that and scribbled down on her clipboard.

    *****

    "Bye, Mina!"

    "Bye, see ya tomorrow, Drays!"

    "Okay!"

I glided down, she glided off. I sighed as I spiraled down from the clouds, then hovered and "step-laddered" down, dropping right into the tree as I got close and saw the coast was clear. I checked again, still clear, and I jumped and glided down and across to my door, fished out my keys, and opened it. I came in, saw no lights were on, and silently closed the door, careful of wings and tail. I padded softly upstairs, checking to see that the rents were asleep, and got into my room.

I de-transformed. Got into my pajamas. Dived into bed. Slept like a log. And had a gruesome dream of tearing into Max, eating his flesh like...like...an animal. I sat up in bed, shouting, "NNNOOOO!!", and was releived to see that it'd lasted up 'til my alarm went off, so I'd not woken anyone up at an ungodly hour. I sighed and got out of bed.

    *****

I didn't tell Max my dream. The days passed by. Soon, the Waxing Gibbous came. And I, again, sat in my room, playing SSX3. I grimaced as I heard a knock at my door.

"Yesh?" I inquired, crossing the finish line at Gravitude and nabbing the medal the color of my hair. Again.

The door opened. Again, it was Sonya. She sighed.

"Hey...You're heading out to Mina's tonight, aren't you?" she asked.

I solomnly nodded. "Don't stick around at 8. I told you what happened last time...on the First Quarter..."

She sighed again. "I...I won't stay around there. I'm gonnuh, head out to Checkers. Yeah." She nodded curtly and did an about face. I wondered if I'd heard an "uh," but then decided I didn't and watched as my rider savored the victory.

    *****

"Alright...I'm ready. You guys ready?" I asked, bracing for the time.

    They all nodded.

Again, a half minute before the clock chimed, Sarge transformed, just to tear up his t-shirt. And again, I had to fight, just to lose, as I became something else.

    But this time...

    ...

...I fought. They were bracing me. 8:30. NO! I MUST GO OUT!! But nobody is out there that'll really pique my intre--

    *Sniff sniff.*

I gasped. That smell. I recognized it. It was my sister. Not the one who'd been gone so long.

The one who wasn't at Checkers.

One word escaped my lips. MY lips. In that split second of shock, I regained control. "Sonya..." I breathed. And suddenly, I lost control of myself again and opened my paws.

"What?! NO!! SHIT!! CRAP!! NOOO!!!" Mina roared, realizing what was gonna happen.

I let loose...what the...? I was suddenly bathed in ecstasy, bathed in sweet cold...but I had no time to savor the cold blast I had shot out from all around me, throwing everyone off and coating the entire room in a thin film of ice. I needed to run.

I ran. I crashed out the side window, out into the street.

She stood there. She was watching the house, and I experienced some déjà vu. She was standing, much like I had. She saw me, and she ran. She ran fast. Her baggy pants' folds trounced about as she ran, and I, stopped by the feeling, got back into it and ran, full tilt. I roared. The hunt was on.

She ran, down a street, through a feild, and right back into the park she was in a while ago. That lamp was still down, but had been moved out of the way. She ran, into the thick trees in the little woods there. I followed my nose, and actually decided to dive into the branches.

With deathly silence, I ignored my screams to stop, to not make her go through what I'd had to go through, and creapt along the treetops. I soon found her, breathing behind a tree. I grinned and, opening my maw, dived down.

She looked up and screamed. And then smacked me with the aluminum bat she'd been carrying. I yiped like a dog and crashed down, but got back up and rushed at her. I wondered why she was carrying a bat with her in the first place, but I didn't care, not even about the pain. I ran at her, snarling.

She ran as fast as she could away, but she couldn't escape me. "Dragos!!" she shouted. "It's ME!! Sonya!!"

I said, I know, but I can't stop, but I didn't listen to me. I just snarled, thirsty for that one, savory, juicy bite...I wanted blood. Human blood. I had a fleeting thought, sorta an understanding: I wanted to spread the curse. But I totally, absolutly, forgot that. I was gaining on her, claws outstretched for her.

She yelped, then, after a burst of speed, said, "Sorry," stopped in a less tree-dense part so I could see by moonlight, and spun around, heavy bat coming for me. That was her mistake. I barely ducked it, flattening my horn-ears. And then, I was in the perfect position.

I pounced her, with strength and speed only a dragon could posess, and we fell to the ground. And I grabbed her, maw wide open, searching for ANYWHERE to bite. Sonya struggled in my arms, which were holding her tight, claws digging into her flesh. She only got out one final "DRAGOS!!" before I chose my spot. And I bit.

And as I did, I felt, as did I, a rush from my body, coming from the spot where I was bitten, from each and every no-longer-there toothmark. The paths it traveled were like cords, feeling like every element I thought possible, and sometimes the feeling of rapid strengthening, then weakening, to nothing at all, which I couldn't place. Cords of lightning. Cords of pain. Cords of rushing water, both varieties, with the salt stinging. Cords of vine, covered with thorns. Cords of acid. Cords of fire. Ice. Wind. Stone. Mud. Everything I could think of. And all at once.

And yet, it wasn't the pain of that that got me. It was the pain of falling. As my sister's screams became more realistic, closer, and I got back into my body, I thought I heard a voice, like mine..."Nooooo..."

And then, the real me was back, the rush stopping. The taste of blood filled my mouth, and I blinked and saw with my eyes. I grunted and quickly relenquished my bite, then got up, off my sister, and stood, spitting and coughing, trying to get that blood out of my mouth. I wiped my teeth clean with my short, but availible, sleeve.

Mina held the spot I bit, writhing and moaning in pain. I looked down, getting away from being over her, and felt my heart just freeze up, just an awful feeling. "Mina...I'm sorry..." I said softly.

She moaned, held out her hand, and gawked in surprise. It was blood-free. She stopped moaning, as she felt no more pain, and looked. "Like I was never..." she began, but, lightning-fast, got up and slapped my as hard as she could.

I slammed down, paw to cheek. "OOWWWW!!" And I couldn't help but say, "Why'd you do THAT?!" even though I knew why, or so I thought.

She seethed. "YOU FUCKKIN' BIT ME IN THE BOOB, YOU PERV!!" she roared, and gasped, as it was, in fact, a somewhat-genuine roar near the end. She then proceeded to do just about what I did when I was bitten. She doubled over and gasped. "Wh-what...?!" she barely asked, before she looked down at her feet as she felt the pressure I felt. She soon began to moan like I did, mouth open, and she "Aaa-AAAAHHH-hhh!!"'ed as her shoes tore and her feet were exposed. She gawked, then looked up to me. "You're payin'.. for those shoes," she told me, pausing when the scales began after the fourth talon shot out. She was flat-footed still, like me, and her scales were, as I could see with my powerful eyes, blue. Not my blue, as in the-Crayola-marked-"Blue"-blue.

I chuckled. "They'll return," I assured her. "As will the butt of your pants," I added, as she suddenly doubled over again.

She let out a long, loud moan, followed by a scream as her tail shot out. Hers was more gracefully long and sinuous than mine. Her tailspade was an icocillies triangle with slightly rounded sides. The longer sides were rounded out, the shorter, bottom side was curved in. I saw her underside was the color of salmon.

Going on, Sonya meeped as the scaling stopped at the base of her neck. Then, she screamed as her wings shot out. They were interesting, in that they looked a bit more like fins, somehow, than wings. I wonder if it was the fact that, unlike mine, the fingers of her wings were almost bone-thin, with almost no lump indicating a joint in the wings, and very smooth membrane edges. All that, and there was a second set of very much smaller wings, more like real fins, coming out sort of like the fins on my face, and they were right underneath where her wing membranes met. The membranes were green.

Then, she yelped as her arms changed...with fins, more fish-like with no one point where the spines met and just along her arm, on the outside edges of her forearms. This made my eyeridges rise. Her claws were, like her talons, grey, and as short (but still able to scratch with) as mine. She looked in horror at all this. "The HELL are those things on--my--" she began, but her head was developing.

She said, "Aarrraammmmm??!?!!!!" as her face became a snout. At the head end, she had horn-ears like mine, but with the same kind of frills that the Glory women had. They also were longer, looked more...fin-like. Then, she yelped as her spines came out, one by one. And between them, a vertically short membrane formed, coming as each next one came up. Finally, she was done, as they reached her tail tip. She stood a sec, then collapsed to the ground, panting.

"Oh, it ain't done just yet, dear sister," I said, grimicing.

She looked up at me with eyes that just begged me, "No..." before she yelped once more as her right wrist bulged, then snapped open with a black-belted bracelet, the top center having that symbol on it. She panted and panted, kneeling and holding her wrist.

After a bit, I slowly walked over to her, carfully because she was known to have mood swings. "Sonya...?" I said softly. "Are...are you okay?" I asked, then braced for the tirade.

A chuckle. "Actually...yeah," she said. "I mean, hey, it was just excruciating pain. Nothing you don't get every day."

"Heh?" I lowered my arms. "You serious? You...don't mind?" I asked.

She shook her head, getting up. "Nope! Truth be told..." She stopped and rubbed her left arm. "...I kinda tried to get bit."

I smirked. "Couldn't resist, eh?" I asked, then remembered. "Waita, then why the fuck'd'you bash me with the bat if you WANTED to get bit?!" I demanded, anger vein coming at my temple.

She looked down at her dropped bat, sweat-dropping. "Uhhhhh...See, ah, erm...I, ah, was, uh..." she frantically raced for an explaination. She snapped her claws. "I was going to the batting cages!!" she said.

I gave her a half-eyed stare. "The batting cages supply their own bats and ask that you not bring your own," I said, then I laughed. "You just wanted to take a slug at me, didn't cha?"

She blushed and growled. "WHAT?! NO FUDGING WAY!! Why the hell would I wanna take a slug at YOU?! You're my little brother!" she defended herself.

    "Exactly."

She grabbed her bat again, and so I took off. "HEY!! GET BACK HERE!!" she cried, and when I didn't...

    NEEERRRROOOOOOMMMM-CLAAAANNNGGGG!!! Eeeeeeeueuuuuuuupp...CRASH!

She found me, dazed and with a big bump on my head, in some limbs of a tree. She'd chucked her bat strait at my head and nailed me in midair. She had it in her paw and poked me softly with it. "Dude," she said, "don't ditch me like that. I dunno how to fly, remember?"

I shook my head clear and glared at her. "You could've just shouted it back at me," I said, rubbing my head. I slipped out of the branches and onto the ground. "C'mon, we've gotta go to Mina's. She'll tell ya everything," I told her, and motioned for her to come.

After following my instructions, we were both aloft and high in the night sky, looking down as police came to the park to investigate the racket. PHEW!! That was too close, I thought. I looked at Sonya, carrying her bat and flying next to me with a little difficulty. My sister...I can't believe it...I wonder who she's gonna chomp...?
